The capital of the Free State of Saxony is a political and cultural center of the federal state. It is also known as "Florence on the Elbe" because of art collections, its Baroque and Mediterranean architecture and the location of the city in the picturesque region of the Elbe River.

Dresden impresses as a work of art with a wide range of cultural heritage sites. These include, among others, the Semper Opera, the Zwinger Palace, the royal palace - residence of the Saxon rulers and kings, also the Grünes Gewölbe (Green Vault)  Museum exhibiting the treasure of the Saxon rulers, a collection of jewelry and representative exhibits of European goldsmith art and craftsmanship. Although the city is mainly famous for its buildings from the period of Baroque and the historicism, visitors could also see cultural heritage sites from 19th and 20th century, such dated from the period of Romanticism, Neoclassicism, Gründerzeit and Art Nouveau. Undoubtedly, Dresden's Frauenkirche (Cathedral of Our Dear Lady) is a special symbol of the city. After its destruction during the Second World War in 1945, it was rebuilt between 1994 and 2005 and because of its history serves as a memorial against the war and symbol of reconciliation.
